CHM86 — crash hardened video memory module

Not just a hardened disk. Evidence outlives the event.

The CHM86 is a crash protected memory unit for onboard video and event data, tested to IEEE Std 1482.1-2013 and FRA 49 CFR Part 229. That makes it usable as the certified crashworthy memory module §229.136(a)(5) requires for a cab image recording system, and as the crash and fire protected storage APTA RT-OP-RP-024-19 sets out for transit operating compartments.

Data arrives over a single Ethernet connection that also carries the unit's power, so the CHM86 is added to a new or existing system as a network storage target. Inside, the storage medium sits in a crash protected steel body; the power supply and controller electronics are mounted outside it in a separate anodised aluminium housing, thermally and mechanically isolated from the memory.

  • Standard: IEEE 1482.1-2013, FRA 49 CFR 229
  • Capacity: 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB
  • Interface: Gigabit Ethernet, PoE
  • Usage: Video
  • Weight: approx. 4 kg (9 lb)
  • Manufactured: USA - FTA Buy America compliant

How the recording survives

Receive

Many camera channels arrive concurrently over a single PoE cable that carries both power and data.

Sustain

11 MB/s written continuously and indefinitely — the recording never stops.

Sequence

Files are deleted only to make room for new recording, and only oldest first. The recording application drives that rotation; the module permits no other deletion pattern.

Hold

Onboard supercapacitor — a power cut still leaves a readable file.

Scale

Up to 1 TB in a 4 kg package.

Report

A REST API reports storage health, wear and power-on hours, and runs subsystem self-tests.

Crash survivability

Tested to IEEE Std 1482.1-2013 and FRA 49 CFR Part 229. Crash survivability testing by DTC Dynamic Test Center AG, Switzerland.
